The traditional tune for this song may have started out as "Johnny, Fill Up the Bowl." Patrick S. Gilmore adapted it when he wrote the Civil War Era song "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." Although the events described in "Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye" most likely relate to the early 19th Century, when Irish troops served the British East India Company, the lyrics may have been composed later.
